EnergySmart CNY’s roots are in our original 2012-2017 Solarize campaigns to help people navigate their solar options. In 2026 we are engaging in a new community campaign focused on solar, both on-site and community solar, so everyone can benefit!
In the original 2012-2017 Solarize campaigns resulted in the installation of 377 systems, comprising over 3,257 kW of installed solar panels on local residences. The average system size installed then (before heat pumps and EVs got popular) was 8.6 kW. Over the past 10 years, based on NREL’s PVWatts calculator’s estimations for the Syracuse area and average annual electric costs, these have together produced 3.8 million kW / year in electricity, saving a total of $6M in electric bill costs.
Solar technologies convert sunlight into electricity or heat. This is most commonly done by using photovoltaic (PV) panels (aka solar panels). The generated electricity can either be used right away or stored in batteries or other forms of energy storage.

Rooftop solar is the most common option for residential (on-site) solar. You can install solar panels on various types of buildings – your home, garage, even a shed. And, as an added bonus, they protect your roof. How can you tell if your home or building is a suitable fit?

Before installing solar, it’s a good idea to get your roof assessed. Remember, the average lifespan for rooftop solar panels is between 20 and 30 years; you don’t want them to outlive your roof.

Ground-Mounted SolarNot all roofs are suited for solar panels. Issues like too much slope, limited space on the north side, or excessive shade on the south side can make your roof unsuitable for panels. However, if you have a large, sunny yard, ground- or pole-mounted solar can be a great alternative. Ground-mounted solar allows you to place panels in the best area on your property. You can also optimize them for sun exposure by including a tracking system so they move with the sun throughout the day. They also have better airflow, allowing them to stay cooler and reduce the chances of overheating.

Community solar offers a great opportunity for residents and businesses to support clean energy without installing solar panels on their property. Through community solar programs, participants subscribe to a portion of a local solar array and receive credits on their utility bill for the energy produced. The flexibility of community solar allows more people to access renewable energy, even if they rent, live in shaded areas, or cannot afford the upfront costs of solar installation.
