The changing federal landscape of tax credits for energy efficiency measures like heat pumps, EVs, solar, and weatherization has prompted many people to reconsider their options. First, there is still time–albeit with expiration deadlines coming up soon–to take advantage of several measures. Rewiring America provides a useful list of tax credit deadlines, many which need to be installed by December 31, 2025, but some sooner.
For businesses or those seeking Elective Pay aka Direct Pay Tax Credits as non-profits, government entities, etc., the deadlines are a bit different. Visit the Lawyers for Good Goverment site or reach out to our Technical Energy Advisor, Erica Herman at x712; eherman@cnyrpdb.org
With these deadlines in place, the time to act is now as contractors are booking up, so get on their schedule.
Need help getting started, but don’t feel like you know enough yet? Rewiring America has quick, easy to read guides to help you be informed to act. You can even take 5 minutes to create an electrification plan as a renter or home owner. EnergySmart CNY can help identify participating contractors and work with you as you think about your options.
State Incentives Continue
Don’t forget, there are state and utility programs to consider. NYSERDA’s EmPower+ and Comfort Home programs for insulation and other energy efficiency improvements continue to operate.
The heat pump rebates available through NYS Clean Heat in our area have increased this year. There are changes coming to the program next year, so again the time to act is now.
For residents who depend on electricity or delivered fuels (e.g. oil, propane, and wood), heat pumps are a particularly important way to both cost savings and comfort. This is all the more important as energy costs increase.
If you would like to learn more about heat pumps, visit our “Success Stories” page to learn more. We highly recommend checking out NYSERDA’s Heat Pump Planner, so you can see what heat pumps may look like in your home (with downloadable PDFs).
Limited Time Offers
There are additional limited time offers for NYS Clean Heat projects in NYSEG and RG&E utility territories completed by November 1, 2025 when combined with insulation or heat pump water heating. If you have a quote in hand or project in the works, talk to your contractor to see if these opportunities apply to you. New customers may not be in time to receive these rebates due to typical project timelines. To qualify for these incentives, you must work with a participating contractor (see the NYS Clean Heat Contractors list). For more information, visit your utility’s NYS Clean Heat page: NYSEG or RG&E.
Do you live here? Special offers by region
Bonus incentives for NYS Clean Heat projects are available in particular regions if you are a National Grid customer.
Earn a flat rate, bonus incentive up to $5,000 if your community has been designated by New York state to get additional investments in clean and high-efficiency technology. Enter your address in the search box of NYSERDA’s interactive map to find out, and talk to a participating contractor to calculate and add this extra bonus to your final rebate. Flat-rate bonuses include:
-
Central Air-Source and Mini-Split Heat pumps $2,000
-
Ground-Source Heat Pumps (Geothermal) $5,000
-
Heat Pump Water Heater (Non Retail) $500
If you live in one of the following priority electrification zip codes and are a gas customer, you may be eligible for a 25% incentive for air source heat pumps or ground source heat pumps.
